French Revolution - Execution of the King
After Louis failed escape attempt in June 1791, he was forced to accept and sign the Constitution which reduced his role largely to that of a figurehead. He was arrested in August 1792 and charged with treason. After a limited trial where his guilt was assumed, he was finally executed in February of 1793. His wife, Mary Antoinette, was killed in October of that year.
